It’s not just being inactive that is harmful to your health, but sitting itself has been linked to an increased risk of cancer.
The statistics out of Canada report that 100,000 cases of cancer a year are blamed on prolonged periods of sitting.

Reviewing data from a 2011 cancer report of 141,210 colon cancer patients and 230,480 breast cancer patients, it was estimated that 30% of the colon cancers (about 43,000) and 21% of the breast cancer patients (about 49,000) could have been avoided with a higher level of activity.
This research also showed that with exercise breast cancer patients showed lower levels of C-reactive protein, which is indicative of inflammation and an increased risk of cancer.
Sitting for long periods of time can also have an negative impact on spinal health. So if you’re a commuter, computer worker, or spend long periods of time sitting, there are a few things you need to do to ensure you’re not putting your health at risk.
- Get up every 60 minutes and take a walk for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Try reclining at a 135⁰ angle in your chair to take the pressure off the spine.
- Try pacing when you’re on the phone.
- Walk down the hall to your colleague’s office instead of emailing.
- Recruit your colleagues to take that 2-minute walk with you to discuss business, instead of sitting in a boardroom.
- Listen to music at your desk and keep your feet tapping.
- Commit yourself to a regular exercise program 3 to 4 times a week.
