Stomach bloating is a common problem for millions of people who try to deal with it on a daily basis. For some it is a painful discomforting experience that lasts for a few hours, an entire day or even days at a time.

When someone experiences the feeling of a bloated stomach, it feels like their abdomen is larger than its normal size. As their stomach has expanded past its comfortable state, clothing feels really uncomfortable to wear and most people mistake it for weight gain.

Some common causes of stomach bloating can be the result of:

  • Eating too much salt or processed foods
  • Not digesting enough protein
  • Consuming carbonated drinks (e.g. soda and spritzers)
  • Drinking too much alcohol
  • Not having enough water throughout the day
  • Birth control pills
  • Some fruits (prunes, apricots, apples and raisins, especially those treated with sulphur)
  • Some  vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and cucumbers, because of the indigestible complex carb raffinose and their high sulphur content)
  • Stress
  • Chewing gum and eating too quickly
  • Food allergies
  • Cereals with a concentration of wheat and bran
  • Milk products (ice cream, cheese, milk)
  • Eating too much fatty foods

Now everyone consists of a different genetic makeup, so not everything on the above list will cause stomach bloating. Furthermore, some people will have stronger reactions to some foods than others, such foods as milk and wheat.

Correcting the problem of stomach bloating is an easy process – it is just a matter of adjusting your daily eating and lifestyle habits. For instance, a good way to find out if a specific food is causing you to bloat is to eliminate the suspected food from your daily food intake for a few weeks. If your stomach bloating still persists, continue to eliminate other suspected foods from your diet. In some cases, stomach bloating is an indication of a food allergy like celiac disease. In this case, the body is unable able to digest and efficiently breakdown foods made with gluten. As many people are unable to digest gluten, there are a multitude of gluten-free products available at your local supermarket or health food store.

If you are not suffering from a food allergy or disease, you can eliminate stomach bloating by:

  • Drinking a minimum of eight glasses of water every day
  • Eating fruits and vegetables not known to cause stomach bloating
  • Avoiding foods heavy in sodium content
  • Avoiding soda pop, fruit juice and soups overloaded with sodium
  • Exercising regularly
  • Limiting your intake of commercial or packaged foods
  • Tracking your food intake and making note of foods that bloat your stomach (a bloat diary!)
  • Reducing your consumption of coffee and tea

Stomach bloating is common for many people and it is treatable with the right health and lifestyle choices. Take the time out of your day to keep a bloating diary so it will be easier to know what foods are causing your stomach distress.
