Nutritional supplements are an excellent way to boost energy, strength, and stamina, as well as increase muscle mass, decrease fat, and keep you feeling young and vibrant. But could your body be absorbing these nutrients more effectively?
Piperine, an active compound in black or long pepper, creates heat in and on the body. It also acts on epithelial cells in the intestines, giving you almost twice the ability to absorb nutrients. Piperine is considered to be nature’s bioavailability enhancing thermonutrient.
Bioavailability refers to the availability, absorption, retention, and utilization of nutrients. The intestine’s ability to absorb is crucial for nutrients to be biologically effective.
We sprinkle pepper on our food to produce a spicy or hot taste. This heat is created from the biological activity from some of pepper’s active compounds. The most notable of these compounds is piperine.
Black or long pepper extracts like BioPerine contain a minimum of 95% piperine compared to the 3-9% found in raw black pepper and 35% found in raw long pepper.
When BioPerine was administered in combination with nutritional materials; in general, it enhanced absorption of the following nutrients by at least 30%:
- Herbal extracts: Curcuminoids, Boswellia serrata extract, Ashwagandha, Ginkgo biloba extract, Capsaicin, Bioflavonoids, forskolin, and others.
- Water-soluble vitamins: Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Niacinamide, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Folic acid and Vitamin C.
- Fat-soluble vitamins: Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and Vitamin K.
- Antioxidants: Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta cryptoxanthin, lycopene, lutein/zeaxanthin, pine bark bioflavonoids complex, germanium, selenium, and zinc.
- Amino acids: Lysine, isoleucine, leucine, threonine, valine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, and methionine.
- Minerals: Iron, zinc, vanadium, selenium, chromium, iodine, potassium, manganese, copper, calcium, and magnesium.
Absorption rate of another healthful extract that can be improved significantly by using BioPerine is Curcumin, from turmeric roots. This extract improves inflammatory conditions including several forms of cancer.
Unfortunately, the therapeutic effectiveness of curcumin is not ideal due to its poor absorption from the GI tract, so the use of a natural agent like BioPerine to enhance its uptake is quite advantageous.
Thermogenic ingredients increase the body’s natural energy output, thereby burning calories, suppressing appetite, and delaying hunger. Studies in thermogenesis show accurate results in burning away excess amounts of tissue deposits in different layers of the body, particularly in the fatty tissue layers. A thermonutrient such as BioPerine would potentially improve the process of nutrient absorption by enhancing thermogenesis. Localized thermogenic action on the intestinal epithelial cells would in turn increase the rate of absorption of supplemented nutrient(s).
According to toxicity studies conducted on piperine, even in broad range doses, it is considered to be completely safe and effective. The recommended dose of piperine for bioenhancement for absorption of nutrients is 0.04 to 0.08 mg piperine per kilogram of body weight. This was several times lower than the amount of piperine that the average individual in the USA is estimated to consume daily.
It may just be worth it to try using some pepper extract to enhance the effectiveness of your regular nutritional supplements.
