To truly understand what it means to be in shape, you need to commit to changing your life into a healthy one.
As a fitness professional, the number one point I want to get across to others is that fitness needs to be made a lifestyle. So, if you are one of those individuals who truly wants to be fit and healthy year round . . . read on!
Just like any other transition, in order to have a fit and healthy lifestyle, bad habits have to be broken. You shouldn’t try to break all of them at once, so let’s start with your nutrition first. If you know that you are a junk-a-holic, start slowly. You can do this by eliminating foods you know you shouldn’t have. Remove an unhealthy food like soda, and replace it with water. Do this for 2 weeks and then eliminate and add something else.
My general rule for nutrition, is keep it natural. Minimize the amount of processed food you put in your body. You should have zero to very little on a regular basis. Loads of veggies, a good amount of protein, some fruits and slow digesting carbs are what you need. Eat carbs like oatmeal, sweet potatoes, brown or wild rice, and every so often, wheat breads or pasta.
NEVER go grocery shopping when you are hungry, it’s a disaster in the making. Make a list of what you need, and stick to it.
Another important factor is to eat every 3 to 4 hours. Try and make it every 3 hours, but never push 4. Make things less hectic for yourself by planning your meals, both weekly and daily planning. It will be easier for you to stick to your healthy eating if you don’t have to get something on a whim.
Now we move on to the exercise part. What do you like to do? Find any activity that doesn’t feel like work. Maybe for you it’s basketball, or swimming, maybe cycling, or even skiing! And yes, walking counts too! It’s a great source of cardiovascular exercise. Be sure to hit some hills every once in a while to challenge yourself. Or even try a hiking trail. If you don’t mind the treadmill, stairmaster, stepmill, or elliptical, then use them too!
As far as weights are concerned, they are a must for everyone. No matter what your gender or age (though if you are younger than 15, consult a doctor first). Try a circuit of some sort to start out. Do your circuit 2 – 3 times per week and be sure to have at least 1 day of rest in between your workout days. Always include some type of stretching into your exercise routine. Many forget that flexibility is a key part of fitness. Tight, unstretched muscles will only diminish your efforts and could lead to poor posture and injury.
Is there anything else missing? Well, yes actually. Drink loads and loads of water. Most people never get enough. Be sure to take a multi-vitamin/multi-mineral. And if you hit a plateau of some sort with your training, try a fat burner. Not all are created equal and it won’t do the work for you, but it can certainly help you out. Look for something that not only burns fat, but will also help to suppress your appetite and elevate your mood.
Stay focused and don’t give up, which is often easier said than done. Figure out what motivates you. Is it a picture of the type of physique you are looking to obtain/maintain or a pair of jeans you want to wear? Whatever, keeps you motivated, keep it in view.
Remember to reward yourself. I mean, you have worked very hard, so splurge, BUT NOT ON FOOD OR SWEETS. Buy yourself a gym membership, or piece of clothing or jewelry! You deserve it! More importantly, you deserve the fittest and healthiest YOU ever!
