These programs are providing communities with practical strategies that will allow them to reduce future health issues that result from eating unhealthy foods.
What’s most interesting here is that they have gone about their strategies from a more impressive advertising angle than I personally have ever seen. They have included school food service providers by offering training to kitchen staffers at schools in order to create healthier menu selections. They have enlisted celebrities to assist with the relatability and likeability factor. Most importantly, they have also reauthorized the Child Nutrition Act.
As corporations spend over 30 billion dollars on advertising fast food, cereals, soda, snacks, cakes, etc., educational messages put forth by top nutritionists and weight loss experts are being implemented to combat this constant barrage of negative nutrition messages that are overpowering young people.
Since McDonald’s ended its super-size menu options earlier this decade, other companies have ramped up the caloric totals for tons of single items, while remaining under the radar. McDonald’s remained the health industry’s whipping boy by taking most of the blame for the mistakes of the entire fast food industry. The current situation is this: If fast foods companies desire to continue raking in ridiculous profits, then why will they change a proven “bigger is better” advertising formula that convinces young people eating huge portions is not only sexy and cool, but perfectly normal?
The predominant message of any serious wellness strategy should be education. Providing a clear and meaningful approach to diet and exercise starts by knowing how much your body needs. Most children eat what’s provided to them, so the focus should be on the parents and educators to explain concepts like portion control. Most of this list is astronomically high for any child under one-hundred and eighty pounds, but this is a typical consumption for many of our children at schools, fast food stops, fairs and functions.
Nutritional Information placed on products are very misleading and need to be plainly stated with total calories in one bottle not per serving. So, for example with Coke, it will state that it has 140 calories for 8 fl oz, not the 20 fl oz that are in one bottle – that’s almost 2.5 times the amount stated in the nutrition information.
As adults we need to educate our children on how to order “clean” food when visiting a restaurant or fast food chain. For example, ordering the hamburger instead of the cheeseburger or skipping the butter on that small popcorn. Portion sizes need to be taught early on to our children in terms they understand – not ounces, kilograms, or milliliters – but terms like palm-sized, deck of cards, handfuls and cups. Making it possible for kids to see the food in terms of what’s actually needed is the key to understanding that food is a fuel source, not a comfort item. That’s what blankets are for!

- A serving of red meat should be no more than 3 oz or the size of a deck of cards
- A serving of cheese should be no more than 1 oz or the size of four dice
- 1 cup = a tennis ball
- ½ cup serving = half an apple
- 1 tbsp = tip of your thumb
- 2 tbsp = a golf ball
