CLA is being tested on overweight and obese children to combat childhood obesity.

In a recent study conducted by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition on overweight and obese children over a seven-month period, researchers found that subjects taking supplements containing conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) experienced less fat accumulation than the placebo group.

CLA is an unsaturated fatty acid found in beef, lamb, milk and other dairy products. As a dietary supplement, it is one of the most natural weight loss treatments on the market. Derived from vegetable oils like safflower oil that is rich in linoleic acid, this compound has been found to inhibit the absorption of fat, particularly in the abdominal area.

This recent study was conducted by Natalie M. Racine from the University of Wisconsin-Madison on 62 overweight and obese children between the ages of 6 and 10. Children were randomly assigned to either the CLA or placebo group and were given CLA once a day for seven months.

After seven months, these children were measured using X-ray to determine their body-fat ratio. Compared to the placebo group, the children taking CLA showed an average reduction of body fat of 0.5%. Fat accumulation in the placebo group increased by 1.3%.

The children’s BMI was also calculated and the CLA group again came out on top over the placebo group.

Other studies conducted over a period of four months on obese women suffering from diabetes have shown CLA to be an effective way to lose fat and reduce weight.

While further studies need to be conducted to prove the overall safety of supplementing overweight and obese children with CLA, the findings prove the effectiveness of this product to inhibit fat accumulation and promote fat loss.
